Although adviced positive, not getting the structural fundings nor project fundings from the Flemish Government made 2016 a very hard year for SiM/Oorstof. Thanks to the support of Stad Antwerpen, District Antwerpen, all the venues and artists involved and especially you, we managed to move forward against all odds and produced, give or take, 134 artists – 26 Oorstof events – 3 festivals – 3 residencies – 2 European tours, started the Dropa Disc label and released 2 lp’s and 1 book and launched the new website soundinmotion.be. These numbers might seem impressive, but quantity is by no means a focus of Sound in Motion, the Oorstof series and Dropa Disc. It just shows there’s a big necessity and a big dynamic going on music wise of which we only scratch the surface by giving exposure and support to artists that aim at the highest artistic quality in whatever they set out to do. It goes beyond saying that coming to the Oorstof events and Festivals and buying the Dropa Disc releases is crucial to be able to continue what we do. And before we all are getting ready to enjoy Christmas and say goodbye the an extremely turbulent year we just wanted to share some of the plans we have with Dropa Disc and Oorstof for 2017:

This Saturday December 3rd Oorstof in collaboration with kc BELGIE and Motives for Jazz will close off the season with the second edition of the Winteroor Festival at kunstencentrum BELGIE, Hasselt. Paal Nilssen-Love, Tommi Keränen, Ketil Gutvik, Jakob Warmenbol, Laurens Smet, Kristoffer Alberts, Thomas Johansson, Per Åke Holmlander, Niels Van Heertum, Mats Äleklint, Jon Rune Strøm, Viktor Perdieus, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Tamaya Honda, Michiyo Yagi, Joachim Badenhorst, Julie Kjær, Klaus Holm, Andreas Wildhagen and Christian Meaas Svendsen will take you on a challenging musical journey presenting 5 unique shows topped by Large Unit as the ultimate headliner.
The Winteroor festival starts at 14h15 (doors 13h30) and on general request will end at 22h00 so people who come by train can enjoy the whole festival and still catch the last train back to Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, … As of 13h30 and throughout the festival we serve fresh and home made food – from light lunch to hearty dinner (also vegetarian) and dessert. There will be extended record and merchandise stands with the latest releases by the artists and Dropa Disc goodies. More info and a detailed time table you can find here. November was already a super busy month with exceptional concerts in the Oorstof series, and the end is not in sight by a long way. On Thursday 24 November Keiji Haino, Teun Verbruggen and Jozef Dumoulin present their first release The Miracles Of Only One Thing for Sub Rosa. But of course not before stunning us with a ferocious live set. The brand new trio of Léo Dupleix, Daichi Yoshikawa and Lauri Hyvärinen, armed with feedback, guitar and electronics will open this exceptional night in a more than appropriate way. For the second event of this fall season Oorstof moves to DE Studio on Thursday October 6th for a unique triple bill presenting the world premiere of Mars Baars – the captivating duo of reed players Mars Williams and Ab Baars, the Belgian debut of the Norwegian trio Momentum with drummer Andreas Wildhagen and bass player Christian Meaas Svendsen – both part of Large Unit – and reed player Jørgen Mathisen, and a solo piano set by Ka Baird (Spires That in The Sunset Rise) touching on Alice Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Arvo Pärt. Just 5 days later on Tuesday October 11th again at DE Studio it’s time for renowned players Ken Vandermark (reeds) and Terrie Ex (guitar) in an explosive duo. This week the Oorstof fall season finally has lift off. On Thursday September 29th Het Bos and Oorstof present an evening of punk legends working very much in the now !
Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Stooges) is at it with Andrea Belfi and Stefano Pilia in Il Sogno Del Marinaio, G.W.Sok (The Ex) melts The Fall, Can, Sun Ra, Captain Beefheart, Public Image Ltd., and King Tubby with King Champion Sounds, Eve Libertine (Crass) joins the all female post-punk racket of Baby Fire and Forest Management’s John Daniel plays it timeless with his electronic drones and ambient washes. Once again the Oorstof funding file is judged as good instead of very good. This means the Flemish Government will not support Oorstof and all the artists involved. So much for the support that committee members always pretended to have, thanks guys. We do value all the encouraging words of support we are getting from artists and visitors alike but a negative impact it will have this time. Not least for the young artists for which the support is very much needed and asked for in the first place.
We are of course proud that last August about 400 people showed up for the Dropa Disc label launch. And if you haven’t already you can get the 2 lp’s and the book we released at one of the upcoming Oorstof shows starting on Thursday September 29th at Het Bos with Mike Watt (Minutemen), Eve Libertine (Crass) and GW Sok (the Ex) who will bring respectively Il Sogno Del Marinaio, King Champion Sounds and Baby Fire to show how relevant they still are. Before you head full on into the long summer weekend and while we are completing the preparations to spoil you on the auditive, visual and culinary level with 3 Dropa Disc releases, seven free concerts and a bunch of delicious home made delicacies we wanted to inform you that as of Saturday our brand new website will go online. You can let us know what you think about it this Sunday August 14th at Antwerp’s Bar Paniek during the free Dropa Disc Festival. As of midday day you can catch Anna Högberg, Elsa Bergman, Lisa Ullen, Anna Lund, Cactus Truck, Manuel Mota & Margarida Garcia, Luster, W.Ravenveer & Bart Sloow, Sheldon Siegel with Kris Vanderstraeten & Timo van Luijk and Bolhaerd live on stage. The first three Dropa Disc release will be available. The Rotkat record fair will seriously diminish your holiday budget.
