On this Antwerp date acid folk improv titan Tom Carter (Charalambides, Jandek…) plays in a double bill with Karkhana a Middle-Eastern supergroup featuring fearless improv strong holders Sam Shalabi, Sharif Shenaoui, Maurice Louca, Mazen Kerbaj, Tony Elieh and Umut Çaglar. Special guest for this Karkhana show is Chicago mainstay Michael Zerang (percussion).
Karkhana is a Middle-Eastern supergroup – Beirut, Cairo, Instanbul, featuring fearless improv strong holders Sam Shalabi, Sharif Sehnaoui, Maurice Louca, Mazen Kerbaj, Tony Elieh and Umut Çaglar. Last year at the Eastern Daze Festival they gave us a taste of the exceptional musical dynamics they generate on stage. Originally started as a tribute band to groundbreaking Egyptian guitar player Omar Khorshid – who also was a crucial component of Ouhm Khartoum’s orchestra – Karkhana’s music evolved and grew into a cocktail of Arabian guitar excursions, explosive freejazz and bands like Kluster and Taj Mahal Travellers. For this exclusive Oorstof concert they will be joined by Michael Zerang on percussion, one of the mainstays of the improvscene in Chicago.
Second show in the Oorstof series for Tom Carter best known for his work with iconoclastic acid-folk band Charalambides and for collaborations with Steve Gunn, Bardo Pond, Thurston Moore and Ben Chasny. Tom Carter has focused on solo performances and recordings since 2012. His electric guitar work weaves strands of melody, drone, fuzz, and charged silence into intricately detailed instant compositions. Carters 2015 double LP Long Time Underground for 3-Lobed was selected as the number-one experimental album of 2015 by The Out Door/ Pitchfork. His most recent release is a collaboration with influential guitar player Loren Conners for Family Vineyard.
