GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO & KALLE MOBERG

From Jim O’Rourke, Akira Sakata, Nate Wooley and Chris Corsano to Steve Noble and Manuel Mota, it’s clear that Brussels-based Italian pianist and keyboard player Giovanni di Domenico values collaborations. In February 2021 he invited the talented Norwegian accordionist Kalle Moberg (Large Unit, Circus) to join his New Mo(ve)ments Ensemble during a short residency at De Singer/Oorstof. Moberg and di Domenico took that opportunity to work together as a duo for the first time.

The recordings of that first meeting – without an audience due to the covid crisis – can now be found on the haunting duo album Pangrams for Dropa Disc, which will be officially released on June 1. To celebrate the release of Pangrams, Sound In Motion and Ancienne Belgique join forces and invite Moberg and di Domenico for an evening at AB Salon – this time with an audience.

GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO (*1977, PIANO)

After obtaining his diploma in ‘jazz piano’ Giovanni di Domenico developed an encyclopaedic technique: rhythm, harmony and tone are influenced by non-western traditions but are equally indebted to Debussy’s Préludes, Luciano Berio’s Sequenzas, to the ‘ambi-ideation’ (each hand independently plays the piano), heard on Borah Bergman’s Soul Note recordings, Cecil Taylor’s polysemantic density, Paul Bley’s bruised transparency and, of course, the most radical expressions of pop music’s underworld, all invariably brought together in his own practice.

It is an approach that he shares with many musicians he has recently encountered, artists as diverse as Chris Corsano, Jim O’Rourke, Akira Sakata, Tetuzi Akiyama, Keiji Haino, Eiko Ishibashi, Joe Talia, … Di Domenico has founded his own label, Silent Water, for eclectic and unclassifiable productions.

KALLE MOBERG (*1994, ACCORDION)

Kalle Moberg is one of Norway’s most promising musicians of his generation. His pioneering work with unconventional techniques on his main instrument – the accordion, is gaining international attention. Moberg frequently performs as a soloist and chamber musician (classical and contemporary music) and as an improviser (free improvised music and jazz). Since 2020 he also runs his own record label Kamo Records.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree in classical music (2013-2017), Moberg held the position of Kapellmeister at the Norwegian Royal Palace. He left Norway in the fall of 2017 for a master’s degree in classical music in Bern. After graduating in 2019, he returned to his hometown of Oslo where he lives and works.

Moberg collaborates with various established musicians such as: Jim O’Rourke who recorded Moberg’s solo album in 2019; Paal Nilssen-Love who included Moberg in his bands Large Unit and Circus in 2017; Paul Lytton and Philipp Wachsmann in the trio The Punk and the Gaffers; Klaus Ellerhusen Holm in his quintet Honest John; the Oslo Jazz Ensemble and shared the stage with international stars such as Mat Maneri, Marshall Allen, Joe Talia, Akira Sakata, Eiko Ishibashi, Okkyung Lee and Ab Baars.
