Notes from the nave is the debut album for Klankhaven Records by Linden S. – Michiel Dondeyne’s alter ego. It’s a musical correspondence from the refuge of an introvert: the ‘nave’ – or the middle part – of a church in Antwerp, Belgium. It’s there, where he established the improvisations on piano that sprouted this album.
Loose ideas became the blueprint of extended collages, wherein piano, subtle loops and samples conflate with the cello of Clémence Clarysse and the tenor saxophone of Jeroen Vanbever. Along the way, the distinction between play and repeat, proximity and distance, fades away.
Notes from the nave was recorded only with a handful of microphones, picking up not only the reverberation of the room, but also the static noise from outside. The record is both a shelter and a tribute. For those who enjoy the music of William Basinski, Tim Hecker and Oliver Coates.
Le Jardin Ultraviolet
Inspired by the idea that a hidden world exists beyond the reach of our senses, guitarist Jan Boudart has composed a five-part, cinematic soundscape exploring a place just outside the limits of human perception.
After graduating as a jazz guitarist from the Brussels Conservatory in 2023, Boudart went on to form the duo De Vlaamse Primitieven with fellow guitarist Freek Vreys. The project draws on the tradition of primitive American guitar, as shaped by pioneers such as John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Jack Rose. In this composition, Boudart places strong emphasis on overtones, evoking the rich, cascading textures of Lenny Breau, while also paying a subtle yet striking tribute to Don Cherry by quoting the instantly recognizable melody from Brown Rice.
The work will be released later this year on Klankhaven Records, but this coming Sunday offers an early glimpse of the album in progress. Nearly a year ago, Boudart presented a brief excerpt as part of the Klankhaven concert series. This time, he will reveal more of the piece, joined by multi-instrumentalist Reverendo Veintitrés
