De Blikfabriek
Five years ago covid decided Lean Left couldn’t take the stage in Sound in Motion’s Oorstof series. Now, 13 years since Lean Left appeared last in the Oorstof series, Terrie Ex, Andy Moor, Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love can’t wait to set the record straight. This time Sound in Motion teams up with the good people of Blikfabriek and RotKat, and adds a new generation of Belgian improvisors with Chrysopoeia for this explosive double bill in the perfect setting of the Blikfabriek Studio The tickets for this exclusive Belgian show of Lean Left are ‘Pay What You Can’ 8, 12 or 16 EUR, get them while they last!

Lean Left combines two explosive duos — the sax/drums collision course of Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love with the pile-driving guitarists Terrie Ex and Andy Moor of The Ex — to make up a positively apocalyptic quartet: an elemental musical force featuring grade A international players zoning in and scrambling together rock, jazz, noise and blistering free improv into a highly-charged onstage assault. The music of Lean Left is extroverted, energetic, powerful and inclusive but also confrontational and provocative, where rhythm, noise, melody and harmony melt together in perfect union. Or, as English comedic genius Stewart Lee stated about the band, ‘jazz theorizing be damned, it’s like being 18 again’.

They are young, boundary-pushing, and possessed by the spirit of experimentation. What began in 2025 as a series of sweltering sessions at Ghent’s Hot Club quickly evolved into a tight-knit collective of KASK students: Chrysopoeia. Within this formation, Noah Jordens (piano & keyboards), Simon Cuypers (tenor sax), Kasper Snellebrand (bass), and Zias Roeland (guitar & electronics) join forces to explore the outer reaches of improvisation.
Chrysopoeia refers to an alchemical process and perfectly captures the essence of the quartet: transforming raw, unpolished sounds into a compelling musical whole — improvised music in its purest and most adventurous form.
