Rossy/Fossum is an improvised duo collaboration between Canadian musicians Sarah Rossy and PJ Fossum. Their work together began at Banff Centre for the Arts in 2018, and the two have since sustained a creative partnership traversing between New York City, Montreal and Copenhagen. Their duo explores improvisations through musical sources of timbral exploration, Jazz, Arabic music and experimental electronics, embodying a unique meeting of improvised music between North American and European aesthetics, highlighting the nuance of each perspective. In 2024, they toured throughout Europe with dates in Montreal, Copenhagen, Köln, Brussels, Berlin and Prague. Now they are working towards recording a debut album in 2026 as well as take part in a month-long process residency in Tunis at Mouhit Space in 2027 for which they received a support from Canada Council for the Arts.
Performer, composer, producer, and educator Sarah Rossy (she/they) is a Lebanese-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Tio’tia:ke/Montréal. Sarah combines influences of jazz, live-processed electronics, and visual projections into autobiographical, ethereal, and socially-outspoken soundscapes for a truly unique result. Having performed hundreds of live shows of original music in under a decade and being the first Canadian finalist of the Ella Fitzgerald International Voice Competition, Sarah Rossy is an ever-expanding curious artist. From 2013-17, Sarah led the chamber-pop group Shyre, playing 300+ live shows of original music on tours across Quebec and Eastern Canada. In 2017, Sarah’s practice expanded to include interdisciplinary movement and visual projections. Mentorship with Meredith Monk, voice and movement research in Berlin, explorations of ethnic heritage at the Arabic Music Retreat, and multiple residencies at Banff Centre were all formative experiences which enticed discipline hybridization. In 2019, Sarah joined Diasporakidz Interdisciplinary Collective and began an ancestral research journey with Diane Roberts’ Arrivals Legacy Project. This meaningful work is now an active part of Sarah’s creative process, inspiring WOVEN (2021), Sawtak Hamal Sawti (2023), and WASH (2024). Active projects include: GEORGE, an experimental jazz band led by drummer/composer John Hollenbeck; Indra’s Net, an interdisciplinary work by Meredith Monk in New York City; Rossy/Fossum an improvised duo with PJ Fossum; as well as Sarah’s self-led band and solo works. Recent original music releases include “Seemingly Insatiable Waves” EP (2024), “Tragic Masochist” EP (2024), and “The Conclusion” (2018). A much-anticipated debut album is set to be unveiled in 2025.
PJ Fossum is a Belgium based pianist, synthesist and electronic musician. Born and raised in Canada he trained in classical music but always gravitating towards improvisation, later in the form of jazz. After a 5 year stint in New York, he moved to Copenhagen exploring more experimental forms of improvisation. Through these experiences he’s been moulded into a versatile improviser and sound artist with a sound pulling from American jazz and European improvised music. He weaves together an expressive sonic world across both acoustic and electronic instruments creating colourful and inventive sound worlds. Currently he’s touring with his Amalgamation-Integration project that injects electronic sounds into the acoustic piano using transducers, transforming the soundboard of the piano itself into a speaker. In addition to a unique timbral quality, this transducer-piano induces the strings to resonate with the sounds that are played through it, creating haunting and mysterious reverberations. His recent compositions have been focussed on the use of space and electronics often paired with live musicians including Polyality for transducer-piano, two voice+electronics, and strings (2021); Svømme for spatialized transducer-piano and 9 piece ensemble (2022); Music for 5 Pianos (2022), SMS Suite/TEXTING for small improvising ensemble , audience, and cell phones (2023), Guitar Summit CPH 2024 for 30 guitars and room (2024), Svømme Redux installation for 8 ice-speakers (2025).
