From Saturday 19 December until Wednesday 23 December 2020 you can enjoy a series of interviews and concerts online by some adventurous musicians of the hyperactive Belgian music scene and beyond. The Begotten and The Groovecats Deluxe each will present a brand new album, Grid Ravage is heading straight from the Trix recording studio to the stage of De Studio, Joachim Badenhorst/Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė/Tsubasa Hori/Roman Hiele are joining forces only for the second time as a quartet and  Timo Van Luijk/Manuel Mota/Margarida Garcia/Bart De Paepe are finally teaming up for a first live show after years of mutual admiration and respect. Guy Peters (Enola, Jazzlab) interviews the participating artists from a safe distance, about their artistic drive to think and work outside the box, even in these difficult times.

After stints at the Citadelic Festival and Jazz Middelheim 1.5, Sound in Motion continues to try and fill the gap created by the cancellation of the Summer Bummer Festival at the end of August 2020. This way Sound in Motion – in collaboration with De Studio and Trix – is supporting, together with you, more than 20 artists and culture workers in these precarious times.

With a Summer Bummer Virtual Rebound acces code  – click on the ticket link of this page – starting of on Saturday 19 december at 12.00 (noon) until Wednesday 23 December midnight, you can enjoy all the concerts and interviews  as long and when you want. This event is free/gratis but your support for the artists and Sound in Motion is more than welcome. Free contributions  can be done here or at check out !

JOACHIM BADENHORST – INDRĖ JURGELEVIČIŪTĖ – TSUBASA HORI – ROMAN HIELE

On recent releases like Kyoto, De Wolkendragers and Summer still, reed player Joachim Badenhorst reflects and reacts on the bizarre Covid times we are living in. But as solitary as this music might be created collaborating with other musicians is still one of his primary motivations. So the assembly Badenhorst organised on October 1st during Garlic & Jazz – a recurring event by Badenhorst, Bei Wen Tan, Otark and Het Bos that combines food an music – capturing the imagination with musicians who have Antwerp and adventurous music as a common thread didn’t come as a surprise: multi-instrumentalist Tsubasa Hori deepens sounds from instruments like Taiko (drums), Koto (Japanese harp) and Kyujo-orin (bells) that are deeply rooted in tradition, excel in the avant garde or flirt with rock and pop; Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė saves the Baltic psaltery or Kanklės – a plucked box zither from Lithuania – from oblivion and combines this with a heavenly voice in bands and projects like Merope, Efterklang or Book of Air and with musicians like Bert Cools, Solo Cissokho or Shahzad Ismaily; Roman Hiele stands for electronic confusion in a most imaginative and intense manner, that’s what we read over at the Dansende Beren blog, and that’s what we can easily confirm. To see just how confused you will get, purchase Stadspark, Mélodie 2020, Saints (OST)Ritmische Bezinning or even better get Sings, Hiele’s brand new release for Ultra Eczema released on december 4th. Summer Bummer Virtual Rebound now offers you a chance to experience Badenhorst, Hori, Jurgelevičiūtė and Hiele on their second date ever.

GRID RAVAVAGE:
YVES DE MEY – LOUIS EVRARD – GINO COOMANS

In order to enhance his sonic possibilities even further Yves De Mey teamed up with cello player Gino Coomans (Sheldon Siegel) and drummer/percussionist Louis Evrard (Ottla) for a unique live performance at the Summer Bummer Festival 2019. On their next move the same trio – dubbed Grid Ravage in the meantime – amazed with seem scorching sets at Het Bos and AB during The Sound of The Belgian Underground. Working at Trix Studio for what will become the debut Grid Ravage album for Dropa Disc as we speak, they will come straight from the recording studio to the real De Studio for a unique live set of brand new material.

TIMO VAN LUIJK – MANUEL MOTA – MARGARIDA GARCIA – BART DE PAEPE

© van der Linden – Detemmerman – Van Luijk – Martins

Manuel Mota (guitar) and Margarida Garcia (bass) just recently released Survival Of Laments, another superb collaboration with Marcia Bassett. But Mota and Garcia are spoiling the audience for many years already with solo work, as a duo or in collaboration with artists like Loren Conners, David Sylvian, Thurston Moore, Giovanni Di Domenico or David Maranha while navigating between Belgium and Portugal. Earth Rundown from 2017, is a direct link to Bart De Paepe who released this tape on his Sloow Tapes label. De Paepe, multi-instrumentalist and esteemed assembler of all things psychedelic (music, drawings, words) finds autodidact Timo Van Luijk – known for his poetic and subtle sound manipulations as Af Ursin and his challenging labels La Scie Dorée and Methaphon – in the duo Ilta Hämärä and recently in collaboration with Louise Landes Levi that resulted in the fantastic releases Ikiru Or The Wanderer (Oaken Palace) and Kami (Sloowax).

THE GROOVECATS DELUXE:
SIMON BEECKAERT – ELKO BLIJWEERT – JEROEN STEVENS – MILAN WARMOESKERKEN

The Groovecats Deluxe were born when Elko Blijweert (guitar), Simon Beeckaert (bass) and Jeroen Stevens (drums), aka The Groovecats, were joined by Milan Warmoeskerken on guitar in 2018. For the past two years, they have regularly awed the crowds at their many improvised-but-always-very-groovy gigs at legendary Antwerp jazz bar De Muze. Live At De Muze, which The Groovecats Deluxe recorded at a safe distance from one another in March 2020, is their first studio album with all original compositions available as a 10″ vinyl release and as a digital download on Heaven Hotel. Titles like Basque SwingDisco SpyJingle Bossa or Ping Funk leave little, or should we say everything, to the imagination. To see how they will expand on the groove, tune in as of december 19th during Summer Bummer Virtual Rebound.

THE BEGOTTEN:
JÜRGEN DE BLONDE – BRECHT AMEEL – DIRK WACHTELAER

The Begotten is the brainchild of Jürgen De Blonde (Köhn/de portables) and Brecht Ameel (Razen), who initially performed a number of shows and released a cassette under the moniker Kohier – gleefully referencing the absurdity of Belgian tax systems and institutions. On their debut lp Temidden Laaghangende Wolken they are joined by percussionist and improv-veteran Dirk Wachtelaer (Pablo’s Eye / Vanishing Pictures), who locked with De Blonde and Ameel’s post-reality continuum during a recording session at Les Ateliers Claus in Brussels. In this new trio format, The Begotten weaves a stripped-down set of after-hours, trancey observations on keys, baritone guitar and drums. Neon-lit bars are named Le Kheops or 60 Moons, streets are soaked in sheets of rain, people are staring at tax sheets and comets pass by unnoticed. Dub with tears; Temidden Laaghangende Wolken is the perfect backdrop of a strongly medicated game of Manillen during a Derrick rerun.
