With the nomadic Oorstof concert series, the annual Summer Bummer Festival, (inter)national residencies and events at Dropa House, and the adventurous record label Dropa Disc, the Antwerp-based organization Sound in Motion has spent nearly two decades connecting local artists with international mainstays of the jazz, improv, and experimental music scenes.
For the new edition of Sund.Aft. on Sunday, May 17th, Sound in Motion presents a cross-section of its operations, featuring surprising local and international guests and collaborations. The event also includes a record fair with stalls from Dropa Disc and local labels, an exquisite selection of world-renowned offtherecords, photo projections, and a Snacks & Bites stand for freshly made refreshments throughout the afternoon. Live broadcast and interventions by radio centraal.
14h15 – ALBERTIJN – HEESTERMANS – FAGHIHI TRIO (artiestenlounge)
15h30 – HYPOMANIAC: CAMILA NEBBIA, GONçALO ALMEIDA & SYLVAIN DARRIFOURQ (grote zaal)
16h45 – CHRISTHER BOTHÉN & JOHAN BERTHLING (grote zaal)

Sound in Motion has a track record of bringing together different generations of adventurous musicians. Think of pioneers such as saxophonist Peter Brötzmann with bassist Farida Amadou; the Antwerp free jazz pioneer and saxophonist Cel Overberghe (then 86) with reed players Adia Vanheerentals and Ornella Noulet, who are a full 60 years his junior; or Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love with saxophonist Hanne De Backer.
For Sund.Aft., the legendary Swedish bass clarinettist and master of the Malian hunter’s harp (Donso Ngoni), Christer Bothén — renowned for his long-standing partnership with Don Cherry and recent collaborations with Mats Gustafsson and Goran Kajfeš — will perform for the first time with Swedish bassist Johan Berthling. With heavyweights such as Fire!, Fire! Orchestra, and Ghosted to his name, Berthling has been a more than prominent fixture on international jazz and rock stages in recent years.
Christer Bothén turns 85 in September 2026. Do not miss this unique opportunity to see this master of the Donso Ngoni go head-to-head with Berthling, a bassist 32 years his junior.

Argentinian tenor saxophonist Camila Nebbia — a rising star in the world of adventurous music; Portuguese bassist Gonçalo Almeida — known for bands such as The Selva and Rodrigo Amado’s The Attic; and French drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq — previously at the rhythmic helm for artists like Joëlle Léandre, Louis Sclavis, and Andrea Parkins — join forces as Hypomaniac. Together, they form a trio that generates an organic and inventive interaction through an infectious groove.

With backgrounds in bands and ensembles such as Zita Swoon Group, Aksak Maboul, Sheldon Siegel, Ignatz & De Stervende Honden, and Ictus, and with firm roots in jazz, improvisation, contemporary, and classical music, the brand-new trio of Christophe Albertijn (synth guitar), Ghazal Faghihi (clarinet, objects), and Erik Heestermans (drums, electronic percussion) sounds like none of these individually. Instead, they represent a fusion of individuals creating music that is simultaneously composed and chaotic, lyrical and loud. Utilising both electronic and acoustic instruments, the trio strives for music that is hypnotic and resonant, yet rhythmic and minimalist.
