Klankhaven / Rataplan
Klankhaven and Oorstof are celebrating the 50th birthday of reed player Dave Rempis with The Outskirts, a stellar trio featuring bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, drummer Frank Rosaly, and special guest Marta Warelis on piano. Adilia Yip, in her turn, explores with her quartet AI Musicking the boundless possibilities of AI as a creative partner.
In March 2025, American reed player Dave Rempis celebrates his 50th birthday with a European tour alongside The Outskirts -his versatile, long-standing trio featuring Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and American drummer Frank Rosaly, who resides in Amsterdam. For the Rataplan concert, Klankhaven and Oorstof are thrilled to fulfill Rempis’ wish to invite Polish pianist Marta Warelis as a special guest to join the trio.
The Outskirts was formed in 2006 during Flaten’s three-year residency in Chicago and quickly became a fixture in the jazz and improvisation scene. The trio later became the backbone of other significant bands, such as The Rempis Percussion Quartet and the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Chicago Sextet. After years apart, the trio reunites to rekindle their remarkable musical telepathy, now enhanced by the unique voice of Warelis.
Rosaly and Warelis recently impressed the audience at Rataplan with their electrifying rhythmic Ruidoscuro set during Interlinie. Together with Rempis and Flaten, they are frequent collaborators in various Sound in Motion projects such as Oorstof, Visitations, and the Summer Bummer Festival.
As artificial intelligence increasingly reshapes how technology is used in artistic expression, Adilia Yip (marimba/balafon/percussion) collaborates with colleagues from the CREATIE research group at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp to explore the intersection of improvisation and generative AI models. These AI systems, trained on her musical practices and sound palettes, generate live sounds and phrases that interact seamlessly with human-created music, creating a surreal and boundary-pushing experience.
For this unique project, Yip surrounds herself with Chiara Percivati (bass clarinet), Giusy Caruso (piano), and Umut Eldem (AI) to explore the boundless possibilities of co-creation, with AI serving as an active creative partner.
The music platform Klankhaven and Sound in Motion’s Oorstof concert series are joining forces for a monthly program at Rataplan. As purveyors of adventurous and challenging music, they pair pioneers and key figures from various genres with young talent from both home and abroad.
