De Studio
Improvising whirlwinds The Rempis Percussion Quartet and Don Kapot setting out to give DE Studio a serious rhythmic shake down both individual and in a team effort on the third day of the brand new Visitations event. Stoked also to be able to add Sho Shin Duo & Seppe Gebruers. New start time is 19.00 !!!
Reed player Dave Rempis, bass player Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and drummers Tim Daisy and Frank Rosaly share a strong interrest in West African and Latin-American rhythms and connect these to American funk and freejazz in the Rempis Percussion Quartet. This improvising whirlwind released Phalanx in 2013, a cd partly recorded live in Antwerp (Oorstof) and hit the stage of DE Studio for the first time in 2016. Those more than steaming concerts and the collaboration with Gino Coomans, Sep Francois and Niels Van Heertum charmed the audience big time. Celebrating their 15th birthday The Rempis Percussion quartet sets out on a new European tour. All band members exchanged Chicago for other places in the mean time making the musical hunger to play together even bigger than it already was.
‘Inaccessible rhythms, blazing intensity, rock-’n-roll energy’, music critic Guy Peters nailed it already when reviewing the stunning untitled debut of Don Kapot. So we didn’t have to go far to find the perfect match for the improvising whirlwind of The Rempis Percussion Quartet.
Don Kapot is the extremely catchy Greek-Belgian alliance of Giotis Damianidis (guitar, bass), Viktor Perdieus (reeds) and Jakob Warmenbol (drums). Perdieus and Warmenbol share a long history in the Oorstof series with projects and collaborations that resonated (inter)nationally. The Greek guitar and bass player Giotis Damianidis joined forces earlier with musicians like João Lobo en Giovanni Di Domenico, who played before in the Oorstof series. Don Kapot ignited DE Studio earlier during Overlast and will do no less for the first edition of Visitations. By way of extra treat The Rempis Percussion Quartet and Don Kapot will team up to end Visitations on a perfect note.

Riccardo Marogna (tenor sax, clarinets, electronics) and Riccardo La Foresta (drums, percussion, electronics) formed Sho Shin Duo in 2013. They developed their original language, rooted in free improvisation, combining the acoustic impact of reeds and drums with live electronic manipulations. Sho Shin Duo have published three albums, Live At Lux (2015), Free the Cat! (2016) and Mycophilia (2017) and toured extensively around Europe.
For this short European tour they now team up with the Belgian piano maverick, composer and improvisor Seppe Gebruers who just released a sublime album with Paul Lovens and Hugo Antunes, will perform soon in duo with Charlemagne Palestine and runs the Troika organisation with like minded musical souls Thijs Troch, Nils Vermeulen, Niels Van Heertum, Jan Daelman, Laurens Smet, Viktor Perdieus … in order to create opportunities for musicians in the field of improvised and experimental music.
Under the Visitations banner Oorstof will show similarities, differences and cross-pollinations between local and international musicians at DE Studio in Antwerp from March 29th until March 31st.
The main reason for this exceptional 3-day event was the request of Marker – the latest generation Chicago musicians led by reed player Ken Vandermark – to set up a collaboration with local talent during a short residency: Hanne De Backer, Audrey Lauro, Farida Amadou and Stan Maris. Add to this the hefty rhythmic and always captivating Rempis Percussion Quartet – celebrating their 15th anniversary – in a double bill with the young and music wise equally intens Belgo-Greek trio Don Kapot, and the last minute addition of piano maverick Seppe Gebruers in trio with Riccardo Marogna and Riccardo La Foresta of Sho Shin Duo and the first Visitations editions is a fact.
