LARGE UNIT

Drawing from his experience in groups like Peter Brötzmann Chicago tentet, Ken Vandermark´s Territory band and Frode Gjerstad´s Circulasione Totale Orchestra but looking for his own group and sound Norwegian percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love (The Thing, Ballister … ) debarked Large Unit  for the first time in the summer of 2013 at the Molde Jazz Festival. Just one year later there was First Blow, a sonic introduction on vinyl and cd for PNL, followed by Erta Ale – a monster boxset for the same label. And Nilssen-Love doesn’t waste time as the potential of these talented newbies and befriended musicians of the very fertile Scandinavian jazz, improv and noise scene is way too big. In 2015 the Riofun ep was released and a photo book with double cd documented Large Unit’s American tour. By 2016 Ana – catching Large Unit as a fourteen piece with Brazilian guests – was on the shelves. Each of  these releases is a mind blowing and lasting calling card. Composition, improvisation, jazz, noise, electro-acoustics, grooves or rock nothing in the musical canon remains untouched. From subtle interventions to hurricane force and from apparent chaos to tightly orchestrated interaction it all seems child’s play for these sonic mavericks. All perfect reasons to have these twelve musicians as central guests and with Large Unit as the ultimate headliner the festival will definitely go out with a total blast.

Jon Rune Strøm (bass), Andreas Wildhagen (drums, percussion), Mats Äleklint (trombone), Christian Meaas Svendsen (bass), Kristoffer Alberts (alto, tenor sax),
Klaus Holm (alto, baritone sax), Julie Kjær (alto sax, flute), Thomas Johansson (cornet, flugelhorn), Per Åke Holmlander (tuba), Ketil Gutvik (guitar),
Tommi Keranen (electronics), Christian Obermayer (sound engineer), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums, percussion)

TOMMI KERANEN – KETIL GUTVIK – JAKOB WARMENBOL – LAURENS SMET – KRISTOFFER ALBERTS – THOMAS JOHANSSON

Paal Nilssen-Love made his debut at kunstencentrum BELGIE with The Thing & Joe McPhee in 2002. Fourteen years later he’s one of the most renowned percussionists in the world of free(jazz) and improvisation. Creating chances for talented up-and-coming artists is one of the reasons why he started Large Unit. This shows already in the first break up of the festival where electronics manipulator Tommi Keranen, guitar player Ketil Gutvik, reed player Kristoffer Alberts and brass player Thomas Johansson are joined by Belgian percussionist Jakob Warmenbol and bass player Laurens Smet in this highly anticipated sextet, that very likely will grow into a septet.

Tommi Keranen (elektronics), Ketil Gutvik (guitar), Laurens Smet (bass), Jakob Warmenbol (drums, percussion), Kristoffer Alberts (alto, tenor sax), Thomas Johansson (cornet, flugelhorn)

PER ÅKE HOLMLANDER – NIELS VAN HEERTUM – MATS ÄLEKLINT – JON RUNE STRØM – VIKTOR PERDIEUS

Tuba player Per Åke Holmlander, trombone player Mats Äleklint and bass player Jon Rune Strøm are no strangers to Sound in Motion/Oorstof, kunstencentrum BELGIE and Motives for Jazz. These gentlemen surprised us earlier with amazing concerts in bands like Angles 9, Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Resonance Ensemble, Fire Orchestra and All Included. But also euphonium and trumpet player Niels Van Heertum and reed player Viktor Perdieus already made their mark in diverse collaborations and with Bolhaerd, not coincidentally in a dubbelbill with All Included starring Mats Äleklint and Jon Rune Strøm. Now united in a very special and unprecedented line up where wind instruments rule.

FAR OUT EAST ! MICHIYO YAGI TRIO > INGEBRIGT HÅKER FLATEN – MICHIYO YAGI – TAMAYA HONDA and special guest JOACHIM BADENHORST

Also bass player Ingebrigt Håker Flaten made his debut at kunstencentrum BELGIE with The Thing & Joe McPhee in 2002 and made his mark with Atomic in 2011. In 2014 he played for the first time in the Oorstof-series with the Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Chicago Sextet. For Winteroor Håker Flaten is joined, for the first time on a Belgian stage, by the Japanese virtuoso koto player  Michiyo Yagi (Zorn, Brötzmann…) and the hyperkinetic percussionist Tamaya Honda (Kei Akagi Trio). Belgian reed player Joachim Badenhorst (Carate Urio Orchestra, Han Bennink Trio) – one of the most talented and hardest working Belgian musicians in the world of freejazz and improvised music – previously worked with Michiyo Yagi in Japan and takes this opportunity to join the trio during one of their compositions.

JULIE KJÆR – KLAUS HOLM – ANDREAS WILDHAGEN – CHRISTIAN MEAAS SVENDSEN

With the release of Dobbeltgænger for Cleanfeed (2016) reed and flute player Julie Kjær shows us that she is more than ready to step up as a leader. Seemingly effortless she shrugs composition and improvised music against each other but dives without a blink in a challenging collaboration with reed player Klaus Holm, percussionist Andreas Wildhagen and bass player Christian Meaas Svendsen. Klaus Holm and his dynamic quintet Honest John took the audience by surprise and signed for one of the absolute highlights of last years Winteroor. Wildhagen en Meaas Svendsen are one of the two rhythm sections of Large Unit and just recently performed with the fantastic Momentum trio in the Oorstof-series

Julie Kjær (alto sax, flute), Klaus Holm (alto, baritones sax), Andreas Wildhagen (drums, percussion), Christian Meaas Svendsen (bass)

JOACHIM BADENHORST – VIKTOR PERDIEUS – JAKOB WARMENBOL – NIELS VAN HEERTUM – LAURENS SMET

The Belgian delegation is represented very well at this years Winteroor Festival and that’s not a coincidence. Sound in Motion/Oorstof, Motives for Jazz en Kunstencentrum BELGIE supported and worked intensively with this new generation of musicians that gradually are making their mark an the international scene. Think about the brilliant concerts of Bolhaerd, the duo’s Badenhorst/Butcher, Van Heertum/Overberghe and Perdieus/Van Isacker and also Laurens Smet Anvers Stock Trade, a unique Swedish/Belgian sextet. Besides the unique ad hoc collaborations Joachim Badenhorst, Viktor Perdieus, Jakob Warmenbol, Niels Van Heertum and Laurens Smet are engaging in during this Winteroor Festival by way of treat they will perform with this all Belgian unprecedented quintet.

Joachim Badenhorst (tenor sax, bass clarinet, clarinet), Viktor Perdieus (tenor, alto, baritone sax), Jakob Warmenbol (drums, percussion), Niels Van Heertum (euphonium, trumpet), Laurens Smet (bass)
