Sanity: Fred Frith – gabby fluke-mogul (UK/US)

Legendary guitarist, improviser and composer Fred Frith is one of the towering figures of experimental and new music. He is probably best known for the reinvention of the electric guitar that began with ‘Guitar Solos’ in 1974. Frith learned his craft playing in rock bands—notably the iconic Henry Cow—and collaborated with Bill Laswell (Massacre), Tom Cora (Skeleton Crew), John Zorn and Robert Wyatt. As an improviser he has performed with key figures spanning several generations, from Derek Bailey and Pauline Oliveros to Camille Émaille and the young violinist gabby fluke-mogul, with whom he connected around 2014. With two solo and two collaborative releases on the Relative Pitch label, fluke-mogul has worked up a mighty reputation almost overnight and has become one of the most original and in demand improvisers on the planet.

For the past ten years, Frith and fluke-mogul have been working together in different constellations, from a violin duo (Frith is also a highly skilled violinist) to quartets with Ava Mendoza and Susanna Santos Silva or in trio with Nava Dunkelman.

“I’ve been playing in a couple of duos for more than fifty years, and they can still pull
me up short every time. With gabby it might as well be fifty years even though it’s
much more recent—challenging, exhilarating, unpredictable, and at the same time
feels like home. Magic.”
Fred Frith

“Listening past, present, future in duo with Fred is a breath infinite. A deep privilege
and pleasure to grow far & close sonically throughout years. An ease unmatched—
endlessly fearless, generative, & expansive. Alchemy.”

Milica Hadžić – Anton Lambert (RS/BE)

The young Serbian vocalist Milica Hadžić and double bassist/sound architect Anton Lambert accept Klankhaven’s invitation to perform together on stage for the first time. Both artists like to color outside the academic lines and resolutely opt for a spontaneous musical adventure.

A few years ago, Milica Hadžić exchanged her native Serbia for Belgium to study at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Although she is studying jazz there, Milica shows a clear interest and curiosity in areas just outside the jazz canon. This year she will release her first solo work. Inspired by challenging exponents of the genre, her work is reminiscent of the unique singing style of Jeanne Lee, the textural works of Charlemagne Palestine and the Ravel-inspired compositions of Charles Mingus

Anton Lambert is not only an active double bassist, but also a passionate sound architect. The work of composer Pierre Schaeffer, pioneer of concrete music, is a great source of inspiration and we hear that in Lambert’s electroacoustic soundscapes. Through the combination of recorded sounds – which are reduced to their raw essence – and manipulated bass sounds, he challenges us to listen on a different level. His compositions include recordings from everyday life and previous travels, such as his residency in Java, Indonesia, in 2019.
