The Swedish Anna Högberg (Saxes) surprised earlier in the Oorstof series with a scorching set of the Dog Life Trio, in collaboration with Mette Rasmussen, Christine Abdelnour, Audrey Lauro, Pak Yan Lau and Yuko Oshima and with the overwhelming Fire! Orchestra. With the fantastic release Anna Högberg Attack she’s putting herself even more in the picture and now she honours the Dropa Disc Festival by bringing bass player Elsa Bergman, piano player Lisa Ullén and percussionist Anna Lund for a set of adventurous music where borders between jazz, free jazz and improvisation fade spontaneously.

Manuel Mota – just recently recording with David Sylvian – and Margarida Garcia – check her lp The Rust Within Their Throats with Thurston Moore – only need an electric guitar and bass to generate an exceptional sound palet. That’s what they prove once again on Crypt, their brilliant release for the Yew-label (2015). Mota and Garcia traded Lissbon for Antwerp since a couple of years but are, since the last fifteen years, worldwide at forefront of experimental and improvised music. Collaborations with main stays like Chris Corsano, Loren Connors, Marcia Bassett, Alan Licht, Helena Espvall, David Maranha … are more than telling. Unique and challenging, perfect for a prominent spot at the Dropa Disc Festival.

Amsterdam is the home base of the hefty improv trio Cactus Truck. John Dikeman (tenor sax), Jasper Stadhouders (guitar, bass) and Onno Govaert (drums) more and more profile themselves as advocates of improvisation and freejazz continuosly generating new initiatives to make their mark . They where responsible for some of Oorstof’s absolute highlights with Universal Indians feat. Joe Mcphee and Seppe Gebruers & Hugo Antunes (Dikeman), IHF Chicago Sextet, Shelter and Made to Break (Stadhouders) en kaja Draksler & Gino Coomans (Govaert). When this trio is united in Cactus Truck they explore al corners of the free jazz and improvisation spectrum, preferable at full throttle …

Trommels ! by percussionist Kris Vanderstraeten is the second vinyl release of the Dropa Disc label. That makes Vanderstraeten the guest of honour at the Dropa Disc Festival as the Trommels ! LP – a mesmerizing recording made at the Oorstof series – will be presented to the audience on the day of the festival. Vanderstraeten honours the festival in return by inviting Gerard Herman (reeds, objects), Gino Coomans (cello) and Erik Heestermans (percussion) of the acclaimed improv trio Sheldon Siegel and tops it with Timo van Luijk (clarinet, Hawaiian guitar) known for his solo projects and collaborations such as Af Ursin, Elodie and Ilta Hämärä.

Also youngsters Laurens Smet (bass), Viktor Perdieus (Saxphones) an Jakob Warmenbol (drums) showed Oorstof earlier how eager and agile there musical appetite is. With Laurens Smet Anvers Stock Trade, Smet & Hugo Antunes duo, Jakob Warmenbol with the Rova Special Sextet and Perdieus with Frans Van Isacker they gave us a glimps of what this new generation of adventurous musicians has on offer. Bolhaerd is the name of the versatile ensemble where Smet, Perdieus and Warmenbol find each other. With sax player Frans Van Iscacker replacing the abscent Niels Van Heertum the Bohaerd quartet shifts the jazz focus and zooms straight into musical adventure.
Luster is a brand new collab between Annelies Monseré and band members of the infamous Mote and Joe Speedboat. The result on the Luster/Hellvete 10” for Morc Records is a nice drop of dreamy acid folk with a woolly and dark edge. The ideal soundtrack for gray, dispirited summer days when one Atlantic depression follows another seemless, that’s what we read in the press about Luster. But our intuition says that Annelies Monseré (harmonium, bass, guitar, voice), Jelle Vanlerberghe (violin, bass), Elisabeth Cornille (cello, voice), Lobke D’Hespeel (drums), Julie Lafontaine (flute) en Yumi Verplancke (voice) just as well can pull a perfect soundtrack for a lazy sunny summer Sunday Afternoon out of the hat.

W. Ravenveer is Erwin Van Looveren, notorious collector and manipulator of modular synths. Multi hour sets with oscillationg synthscapes are not unusual for W. Ravenveer, but just as well he launches us straight into the kosmos with fierce and bold sound punctures. For the Dropa Disc Festival he once again will dive into the unknown with the esteemed assembler of all things psychedelic (music, drawings, words) and head honcho of the infamous Sloow Tapes label Bart Sloow who will counter W.Ravenveer with synth, indeed sir, and guitar. The only thing you have to do for a ticket into the kosmos is to close your eyes …
