Les Ateliers Claus
Since a number of years, legendary trumpet player Jac Berrocal has found the perfect foil in his fellow countryman Vincent Epplay, an inventive improviser, composer and catalyst who creates challenging, acutely modernist yet historically aware settings for Berrocal’s unmistakable voice and lyrical horn sound to flourish. Belgian sound instrumentalist and improvising composer Timo van Luijk, who has known Berrocal since the Catalogue concert he organized in Brussels in 2007, almost accidentally joins in on guitar, an instrument he rarely played before. In preparation of their first album, the trio visits les ateliers claus for a rare performance.
Jac Berrocal is a French trumpet player, poet and occasional film actor, active since the early 70s in the Paris improv scene, where the boundaries between music, art and theatre were porous and begging to be breached. Inspired by bebop, chanson, free jazz, beat poetry, early rock ‘n roll and myriad Eastern influences, Berrocal blazed a trail across the underground throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, both solo and with many individuals and ensembles like Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Nurse With Wound, Sunny Murray, Pascal Comelade, Jacques Thollot, James Chance, Pierre Bastien, Aki Onda, Lol Coxhill, Catalogue… Together with the black angel of rock and roll, Vince Taylor he wrote the underground hit ‘Rock and Roll Station’.
Vincent Epplay is a French sound artist. Since the early nineties, he has created a singular body of work exploring the interaction between sound process and visual shapes. He develops a peculiar and prospective approach to electronic music, focused on aleatory composition, learnings of musique concrete and a poetic/humorous reappropriation of vintage sound/film material. Epplay produced a dozen of records for various music labels: Blackest ever Black, Akuphone, Klanggalerie, Planam/ Alga marghen and has performed with musiciens as Jac Berrocal & David Fenech and Sayoko Japanese Musicians.
Timo van Luijk is an autodidact sound instrumentalist, improvising composer and (photo)graphist. Together with Geert Feytons (†2006) he formed the experimental music collective Noise-Maker’s Fifes (1989-2006). In 2002 he founded the La Scie Dorée record label on which he publishes the music of his intimite Af Ursin solo project as well as studio and live collaborations with a.o. Andrew Chalk (Elodie), Christoph Heemann (In Camera), Frederik Croene, Kris Vanderstraeten. He also performed regularly with Limpe Fuchs, Nurse With Wound, Raymond Dijkstra, Louis Landes Levi and Bart De Paepe. Timo as well operates the Metaphon label which mainly publishes previously unreleased recordings of avantgarde and electronic music composers and archive works by Michael Ranta.
