OLT Rivierenhof
After the sold out edition of 2019 the fifth edition of the two-day Summer Bummer Festival will set up base at the sublime setting of the open air theater OLT Rivierenhof for the first time. The festival will support – under the Take Care banner – no less than 35 musicians/artists/culture workers.
With a line up that appeals to the imagination, unique collaborations between Belgian and international musicians, some surprising headliners, a record fair, a free of entrance tuneful workshop for young and old (coronaproof) and … Kurt Overbergh (AB) as your perfect host, Summer Bummer 2020 is heading – despite the difficult conditions – for another successful edition.

Wether solo, with pop icon Neneh Cherry or with Fire! Orchestra counting 28 musicians, Swedish reed player Mats Gustafsson keeps spoiling us with pleasant surprises, THE END being one of the newest and nicest. Teaming up with phenomenal vocalist Sofia Jernberg (Fire! Orchestra), reed player Kjetil Møster (Ultralyd, Møster), guitar player Anders Hana (MoHa!, Jaga Jazzist) and drummer Børge Fjordheim (Cloroform) Gustafsson takes you from stunning and subtle to loud and ugly and back again in just a snap.

Like Peter Brötzmann English reed player Evan Parker is one of the most legendary musicians that since the sixties is turning the concept of jazz inside out and keeps pushing it into new directions. For Summer Bummer he will do so for the first time in a trio with the equally legendary German percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and performance artist Limpe Fuchs (Anima Sound) and Belgian self-taught multi-instrumentalist Timo Van Luijk (Af Ursin, Elodie). AMM drummer/percussionist Eddie Prévost will join the trio as a special guest at the end of the set.
Young Norwegian accordeon player Kalle Moberg (Large Unit) just made his solo debut with The Tokyo Sessions Volume 1: Unheard – of lp recorded by Jim O’Rourke. Moberg definitely shares a passion for adventurous sounds on the accordeon with Stan Maris who is best known for his band Kreis – new release coming soon – and for his greatly appreciated musical contributions to Ken Vandermark’s Marker compositions during last years Visitations Festival at DE Studio.
Before Covid 19 decided different, Nicolas Chkifi (drums), Ann Eysermans (harp, bass), Frans Van Isacker (alto sax, clarinet) and Ananta Roosens (violin) where ready to honour the Visitations Festival with some passionate improvised music. Fortunately the rematch follows now already during the Summer Bummer Festival, much quicker than first anticipated. Though these musicians are active in superb bands like Fenna and Fnussjen their Summer Bummer set will not be a mirror of that. Expect a new cutting edge musical approach by a group of extremely versatile musicians on the top of their game.
Summer Bummer 2020 was made possible i.c.w. Sound in Motion, DE Studio, Arenberg/OLT Rivierenhof, CC Deurne, Cinema Rix, Trix and Radio Centraal
