GRID RAVAGE – DOWNLOAD ONLY – MP3/WAV/AAC

10,00

‘Grid Ravage’s debut album for Dropa Disc sounds organic, just like their live performances, with the music being born on the spot. The tight drumming of Louis Evrard (Ottla), the razor-sharp cello of Gino Coomans (Sheldon Siegel) and the permeating electronics of Yves De Mey naturally flow into each other. The result is a strikingly versatile and accessible record, on which the tension is built up in every track, until it’s not clear anymore who’s being followed around by whom. In this way, these three gifted musicians create a slightly paranoid, menacing, noirish atmosphere, definitely suitable as a soundtrack for imaginary night walks through the city.’ Wim De Beuckelaer

Description

In 2019, Sound in Motion invited Yves De Mey for a surprise act during the Summer Bummer festival. Unexpectedly, De Mey suggested a project with Gino Coomans (Sheldon Siegel) on cello and Louis Evrard (Ottla) on drums, both musicians with experience in various fields. They closed the festival with a stunning performance in De Studio’s Rotonde. The audience as well as the musicians were hungry for more. De Mey, Coomans and Evrard baptized their band Grid Ravage. Despite the corona restrictions, they played different venues: Het Bos in Antwerp, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels and again the Summer Bummer festival, first as part of an online edition in 2020 and then as headliner in 2021.

In December 2020, Grid Ravage entered the TRIX studio for their first album. All ingredients of their organic live performances are there: the moods change from restrained and misty to grim and menacing, and then back to silence, ready to build up tension again. The three instruments seem to merge into a natural unity, in which none of the musicians takes up a leading role. As Yves De Mey himself put it in an interview with Subbacultcha: ‘We don’t have fixed songs, but we do have certain patterns we start with, and from that the rest of the music evolves. This process was also the basis for the band’s name: you start with a grid, and end up with a ravage!’

Impressed by this unique trio from the very beginning, Kurt Overbergh (AB Brussels) invited Grid Ravage for a show at AB’s BRDCST Festival 2022, on April 10th. The ideal occasion for the band to present their debut release for Dropa Disc.
