Thanks for supporting us and a Happy New Year to all of you. Next up and first show for 2018 is on at Le Vecteur in Charleroi. Oorstof, Mnóad and Le Vecteur team up to present the quartet of Teun Verbruggen, Nate Wooley, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Jozef Dumoulin and Jasper Stadhouders’ Polyband. Mette Rasmussen (alto sax) & Pak Yan Lau (piano, electronics) play two live shows in the Oorstof series. The first show on Thursday 30/11 at AB Salon is a double bill with the new generation of Chicago improvisors Steve Marquette (guitar), Macie Stewart (violin) and Charlie Kirchen (bass) performing as the Few. This is a free/gratis show, doors open at 19.45. The second show of Rasmussen & Lau is on Sunday December 3rd at DE Studio and that’s a double bill with the superb trio of Farida Amadou (bass), Audrey Lauro (alto sax) and Hanne De Backer (baritone sax) who invite percussionist Tom Malmendier and set out as a 4tet. Just two weeks into the well earned summer holidays but already eagerly looking forward to the end of it. Why? Well, over here at Sound in Motion/Oorstof we are pretty stoked to announce a new two day edition of the challenging Summer Bummer Festival at the sublime premises of Antwerp’s Zuiderpershuis. And challenging it will be:
This will show already on Saturday August 26th with the impressive electronic soundscapes and visuals of GAS (WOLFGANG VOIGT), the sublime mix of punk, blues and free improvised music by BILL ORCUTT (electric guitar), the exceptional dynamic of Angels 9, Fire! and Saint Francis Duo skilfully contorted by the trio of MARTIN KÜCHEN (sax), JOHAN BERTHLING (bass) and STEVE NOBLE (drums), the unpredictable and challenging electronics of YVES DE MEY, the mind expanding wall of drones and swats of analogue synths constructed by DSR Lines and Hellvete under the BRAHMEN RAAG banner and the spontaneous interaction between FARIDA AMADOU (bass), AUDREY LAURO (alto sax) and HANNE DE BACKER(baritone sax).
On Sunday August 27th Summer Bummer continues along the line of diverse and adventurous music: On his releases OREN AMBARCHI is often joined by artists like Jim O’Rourke, Arto Lindsay, Will Guthrie and Mark Fell, live he just needs an electric guitar and a battery of effects to generate his impressive musical world. Legendary saxophone player and free jazz pioneer PETER BRÖTZMANN (tenor sax, tarogato) for the first time teams up with his Japanese musical brother TOSHINORI KONDO (trumpet, electronics) and HEATHER LEIGH (pedal steel) as a trio. POULOMI DESAI transforms her sitar into a more than suprising electro-acoustic sound source. With JOHN EDWARDS (bass) and STEVE NOBLE (drums) saxophone player JULIE KJÆR brings one of the best rhythm sections in the alternative music and free jazz to Summer Bummer showing us how thin the line can be between composition and improvisation. NIELS VAN HEERTUM (euphonium) and ERIC BOEREN (trumpet, cornet) for the first time bring out their duel of the coppers though it might as well turn into a genuine musical courtship. ELKO BLIJWEERT and FRANS VAN ISACKER refer to Bach, Brian Eno, Boredoms and Beethoven when talking about their guitar and saxophone duo.

For the last Oorstof event of the spring Sound in Motion teams up with Music is Now and the legendary Brussels jazz bar L’Archiduc. We are more than proud to be able to present an exclusive show on Sunday 21 May, 5 pm by the ultimate piano/sax duo of Matthew Shipp (US, piano) and Ivo Perelman (BR, sax) … celebrating the release of the seven-volume The Art Of Perelman-Shipp, a high-water mark for the duo format and for free improvisation. Please note this is an afternoon show, starting at 5 pm ! Doors open at 3 pm, no reservations, no pre-sales, just come down early and enjoy a nice cocktail at the amazing art deco bar while waiting for the show, it’s more than worth it …

Zappa (Yes, that’s Frank’s nephew) as Jooklo Zappa. Nice to see so many people came out for the Ballister show and the presentation of our 2 new Dropa Disc releases. And The next Oorstof event is coming up this Thursday March 23rd already at the mighty Zuiderpershuis. Belgian percussionist Jakob Warmenbol (Bolhaerd, The Rova Special Sextet) and Swiss-Swedish reed player Sebastian Strinning (Joachim Badenhorst, Frank Gratkowsky) will record their debut album as the next pony level and Chicago expat and percussionist Frank Rosaly will play a rare solo set for the first time on a Belgian stage. On Sunday March 19th Dave Rempis, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Paal Nilssen Love once again will hit DE Studio hard with a 2 set Ballister show. And there’s a good reason why this ultimate power improv trio returns to Antwerp. March 19th is the official release date of the Ballister lp/dvd Low Level Stink (edition of 300) on our own Dropa Disc label, recorded at DE Studio during Ballister’s superb and sold out Oorstof show in 2015. It’s a back to back release with Ballister’s Slag cd, recorded the day after the Antwerp show at Cafe OTO and released on Aerophonic. And there’s more Dropa Disc news. March 19th is also the official release date of the PEN cd on Dropa Disc (edition of 500), the first ever release of the stellar trio of Evan Parker, John Edwards and Steve Noble, recorded in 2015 at their Oorstof show at Zuiderpershuis. So don’t hesitate and make sure you reserve a spot for this memorable event. Going by the pre-orders we already received for both Ballister: Low Level Stink and Slag, and Parker, Edwards, Noble: PEN it might be wise to pre-order a copy of either one of them or all three releases while you are at it. Here at the Oorstof HQ we always are excited about the next event and we always try to convince people it’s more than worth it to come down for the shows. And then there’s the Oorstof events where we do not need to convince anyone that missing out is missing out on something exceptional indeed. This is certainly the case for the double bill that’s on this Wednesday March 1st for which we team up with the good people of De Singer at Rijkevorsel. Stellar, yes sir, that’s the least we can say of the artists that are lined up.
This Is Our Language, a reference to Ornette Coleman’s classic album This Is Our Music, is the name by which Rodrigo Amado and his brothers in music Joe McPhee, Chris Corsano and Kent Kessler since 2015 fuse past and future into an ultimate free jazz trip. Giovanni Di Domenico, Gonçalo Almeida and Balázs Pándi in their turn use Cement Shoes as a moniker, a perfect way to describe how they will nail you to the floor while further crossing and exploring the sonic borders and possibilities of improvised music.
